So we never really got the much heralded storms last week and therefore the vines are still very thirsty. What we did get however was lots of cold windy weather. On Wednesday night we had some rain, about 10mm, but the next four days through the weekend were unseasonably cold and windy. The result of this is that the maturity in the vines has not advanced as quickly as expected.
We had planned to start harvesting tomorrow. Everything was ready in the winery and the team was all lined up, but when this afternoon we got the results from the lab’ of the samples we took this morning it was clear that the cold weather had really slowed the vines down. The sun has reappeared today (with thanks to the Mistral!) and the weather is forecast to be sunny and warming up again over the next few days so after discussing at some length with our oenologue we have decided to push back the vendange a few days. It’s a little disappointing as we were all set for the start tomorrow, but the weather is set fair and therefore not forcing our hand and in the end it will be better to wait a few more days.
